Kiosk Syrups
the syrups from the kiosk
The Kiosk or “ciospu” as it is called in Sicily, is a small refreshment point located in most Sicilian cities and in particular in the Catania area where it has very ancient origins. This tradition has its roots in the past, when the people of Catania gathered in the kiosks to taste the famous "seltz", sparkling water mixed with syrups with lively and varied flavors, such as lemon, orange, almond, mint and many others.
These kiosks become real meeting places, where people gather to enjoy a cool drink, especially during the hot summer days. The art of preparing these drinks is often passed down from generation to generation, with each kiosk presenting its own secret recipes and special blends.
The preparation of the drink is a ritual: the seller pours the chosen syrup into a glass, adds the seltzer water and mixes carefully, often adding half a freshly squeezed lemon, thus creating a sweet effervescence that invites you to sip. The combination of flavors and the refreshing effect make these drinks a symbol of the Catanian culture, representing the hospitality and joy of life of its inhabitants.
Savoring a drink from the kiosks is therefore an experience that goes beyond simple taste; it is a moment of sharing and conviviality, a way to experience the soul of Catania and its traditions.
Today you can recreate the Chiosco experience right at home, by following three simple steps: a dose of syrup, a splash of Seltz “Chioschetto” water, the squeeze of half a lemon and a vigorous stir. Enjoy them just like at the Chiosco!
